Frequently asked questions about dual control car hire

How do I book a dual control car?

To book your car simply call our rental reservations department on 0141 849 7170 or book now.

How old do I have to be to hire a dual control car?

You must be 17 years old or over, possess a current UK provisional licence and be accompanied at all times by a qualified driver, who is 23 years old or over. We charge £10 per hire for accompanying drivers aged 23-24. If you currently possess a full UK automatic driving licence, you will still be able to hire a manual dual control car with a provisional driving licence. Certain endorsed licences may be accepted for both provisional and full licence holder - please contact us for details.

What if I already possess an automatic driving licence?

If you currently possess a full UK Automatic driving licence, you are still able to hire a manual dual control car as a provisional driver.

What qualifies me as an accompanying driver?

An accompanying driver must be 23 years or over and must have held a full and valid UK or EU driving licence for a minimum of three years. If the accompanying driver is aged 23-24, they are required to pay an additional young driver supplement of £10, either at the time of booking or on collection of the vehicle. If the accompanying driver has points on their licence, please check with the branch prior to hiring, to ensure the driver is eligible.

The accompanying driver must be qualified to drive the type of vehicle being driven by the learner, i.e., they must have a manual licence if they are supervising the learner in a manual car. Insurance is provided for both the learner and the full licence holder but not for Hire and Reward, meaning that qualified driving instructors are unable to accompany learner drivers in a professional capacity.

If you are a qualified driving instructor, please contact us for further details on what options are available to you.

What qualifies me as a learner driver?

You must be 17 years old or over, possess a current UK provisional licence and be accompanied at all times by a qualified driver who is 23 years old or over. We charge £10 per hire for accompanying drivers aged 23-24. If you currently possess a full UK automatic driving licence, you will still be able to hire a manual dual control car with a provisional driving licence. If you currently hold a full manual UK licence, you can only be an accompanying driver and you are unable to rent these vehicles for driving practice.

What documentation do I need to bring with me to hire?
  • Both driving licences, the UK provisional for the learner and the EU or UK licence for the accompanying driver.
  • All UK drivers should also bring their access code from the DVLA, which you can acquire from the DVLA’s online Share Driving Licence system.
  • A valid credit or debit card to leave an imprint for any additional costs. The card must be physically shown and cannot be a digital/online only card.
  • Proof of address*
  • * We only require proof of address from the learner driver on a dual control hire e.g. utility bill or bank statement dated within the last 3 months. However, when a parent and child are hiring and the learner is struggling to provide proof of address, we are happy to accept the proof of address from the parent instead.

Can I carry any passengers?

Additional passengers must not be carried at any time in our dual control cars.

Do you offer driving lessons?

No, you need to be accompanied by a friend or relative over the age of 23 who has held a full licence for more than 3 years.

Can I use an Arnold Clark dual control car to sit my driving test?

Yes, you can use our dual control cars to sit your driving test. We recommend that you hire one of our dual control cars for at least one hour on a previous day to check licence details and to familiarise yourself with the vehicle. Is VAT & insurance included?
