Dual Control hire

Our dual control cars come with:

  • Two sets of controls
  • High-visibility graphics
  • Front and back learner plates
  • An extra internal rearview mirror

To book:

Charges

  • The minimum period of rental is one hour and the maximum is four hours.
  • Mileage and fuel are included.
  • VAT and insurance are included.
  • An excess will be charged for any vehicle damage, however, an optional excess waiver can be purchased (subject to qualification).
  • There’s an additional £10 per hire for accompanying drivers aged 23 – 24.
  • We can’t guarantee a vehicle until we receive payment in full. We accept most major debit and credit cards – we do not accept pre-paid credit cards. We also accept payments via PayPal, and online payments by Apple Pay and Google Pay. Please note that you can’t pay by cash at any of our branches.

Provisional licence holder

  • Must be 17 years old or over (16 if receiving the higher rate of the mobility component of the Disability Living Allowance).
  • The licence holder must possess a clean, current and valid UK provisional licence (If you currently possess a full UK automatic driving licence, you will still be able to hire a manual dual control car with a provisional driving licence).
  • Certain endorsed licences may be accepted, please contact us for details.
  • A provisional licence holder must be accompanied at all times by a qualified driver, who is 23 years old or over.

Full licence holder

  • A full licence holder must be 23 years or over.
  • Must have held a full, clean and valid UK or EU driving licence for a minimum of three years.
  • Certain endorsed licences may be accepted, please contact us for details.

Driving tests

  • Our vehicles can also be used for driving tests.
  • We recommend that you hire one of our dual control cars for at least one hour on a previous day to check licence details and to familiarise yourself with the vehicle.
  • Please let us know that you require the car for your test at the time of booking with us.

Please note:

  • If you currently hold a full manual UK licence, you can only be an accompanying driver and you are unable to rent these vehicles for driving practice.
  • As the agreement is raised in the provisional driver’s name, we need to see both drivers with their driving licences, the UK provisional for the learner and the EU or UK licence for the accompanying driver.
  • All UK drivers should also bring their access code from the DVLA, which you can acquire from the DVLA’s online Share Driving Licence system.
  • We need to see a valid credit or debit card to leave an imprint for any additional costs. The card must be physically shown and cannot be a digital/online only card.
  • We only require proof of address from the provisional driver, for example, a utility bill or bank statement dated within the last three months. However, when a parent and child are hiring and the provisional driver is struggling to provide proof of address, we are happy to accept the proof of address from the parent instead.
  • The accompanying driver must be qualified to drive the type of vehicle being driven by the learner, i.e., they must have a manual licence if they are supervising the learner in a manual car.
  • Insurance is provided for both the learner and the full licence holder but not for Hire and Reward, meaning that qualified driving instructors are unable to accompany learner drivers in a professional capacity.
  • Passengers cannot be carried in the learner car during lessons, however, the full licence holder can sit in the back of the car during the test.
  • Learner drivers who hold a provisional licence are allowed to drive on the motorway provided they are in one of our dual-controlled cars accompanied by an approved driving instructor (ADI).
  • Parents and friends are unable to carry out motorway lessons unless they hold an ADI licence.
  • Non-EU full licence holders who are exchanging their licence after 12 months and have a UK provisional licence must be accompanied at all times by a qualified driver, who is 23 years old or over.

Learning to be a driving instructor

The approved driving instructor (ADI) part 2 test is the second step in the three-step process to become a driving instructor. This test involves the hirer driving the dual control car with the examiner as a passenger testing them on various points.

  • The hirer can collect the car on their own on production of proof of test date/time.
  • The minimum period of rental is one hour and maximum is four hours.
  • The hirer can also hire the car in advance on their own for a maximum of four hours (either in one block or in four blocks of one hour etc).

The approved driving instructor (ADI) part 3 test is the final step in the three-step process to become a driving instructor. The test involves a DVSA examiner observing the hirer give a one-hour lesson to a pupil. The pupil can be a learner or full licence holder, they can’t be an approved driving instructor (ADI) or someone else who is preparing to take the ADI part 3 test.

  • The hirer must collect the car with their ‘pupil’, we must see both licences and proof of test date/time.
  • The minimum period of rental is one hour and maximum is four hours.
  • The hirer can also hire the car in advance with their ‘pupil’ for a max of four hours (either in one block or in four blocks of one hour etc).
  • Passengers cannot be carried in the learner car during lessons but the examiner will sit in the back of the car during the test.

Qualified driving instructors

If you are a qualified driving instructor, our cars are available for rentals based on a 24-hour period. You will be required to cover the car on your own insurance.

Offers and promotions

  • Our car rental offers and promotions are only available for stipulated periods of time and are not available all year round.
  • Each promotion will specify the dates the promotion is valid for and which vehicles are available within the promotion.
  • These promotions are subject to terms and conditions and availability.
  • Where requested, proof of eligibility for discount codes must be shown when you collect your vehicle. Failure to provide proof may result in your discount being removed at collection.
  • Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental reserves the right to amend these terms at any time.
  • Car rentals dates which overrun or exceed the valid dates of a promotion will not be eligible for the stated promotional prices or offers.
