Staycations for couples

This year has been tough on couples, and the thought of a romantic getaway is more appealing than ever. So whether you’ve been separated by lockdown, need some alone time from the kids or you’re simply fed up of nights in watching Netflix, we’ve come up with some inspiration for a dream couples’ staycation that’s only a car ride away.

Wild camping on the Isle of Barra

If you’re into the great outdoors, why not wrap up warm and spend a couple of nights under canvas on a wild Scottish island? In the absence of the crowds of tourists that usually descend on the Outer Hebrides in summer, you can enjoy the romantic serenity of endless white sands and uninhabited landscape. Wild camping is legal in Scotland so you can save money on accommodation and be at one with nature as you pitch your tent and set up a campfire. Please just remember to clean up once you leave so that others can enjoy it too. Spend your days strolling the beaches, clearwater paddling or soak up a bit of history by taking the short boat trip out to see Kisimul Castle .

Skiing in the Cairngorms

As we leave the warmer summer months behind us, it can feel like the options for staycations start to diminish. However, just because you can’t jump on a plane to the Alps doesn’t mean you have to skip a skiing holiday this year. The Cairngorms can provide the perfect alternative to get your snow fix. Think dramatic landscapes, cosy cabins with hot tubs, log burning stoves and plenty of après ski. If cold weather sports aren’t your thing, Aviemore still has plenty to offer in the form of long hiking trails, bike hire, quaint cafes and distilleries.

Wine tasting in England

If active holidays aren’t for you and all you’re dreaming of is a glass of wine in the south of France, then you might be surprised to hear that there are a few alternatives right on your doorstep. There are several award-winning vineyards only a car journey away that will make you forget you’re in the English countryside. Whether you choose Cornwall, Buckinghamshire or West Yorkshire, many vineyards have guided tours, wine tasting events and ample accommodation on site for you to enjoy a few peaceful nights away.

Lake District spa break

Feeling stressed and just need some TLC? Where better to go for a relaxing break than in the picturesque Lake District? You’ll find an abundance of romantic hotels in the area, and depending on restrictions, they offer a variety relaxing spa packages to treat yourself to a little bit of luxury. Spend your days getting lost in a good book, soaking up the beautiful views and spending quality time together.
