Dual control advice for accompanying drivers

Accompanying a learner driver? Follow these tips to make sure you’re getting the most out of your Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental dual control car.

Keep calm

Learning to drive doesn’t need to be a stressful experience. As the accompanying driver, it’s your responsibility to keep a level head so the learner feels more at ease. Keep your cool and make sure you’re fully aware of your surroundings and the potential hazards out on the road.

Plan ahead

With Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental’s dual control cars there’s no mileage restriction, giving you the freedom to drive around without worrying about the cost. Use your time wisely by planning your route ahead of time and know exactly what you’ll be doing and where you’ll be going. If you’re not familiar with the area, ask a member of staff in branch and they’ll be more than happy to help.

Don’t get carried away

You might be a confident and accomplished driver, but it’s important to remember that you’re not a driving instructor. Even if you think you have an easier parallel parking method, it’s better to not confuse things. Chat with the learner beforehand and discuss their ability and level of driving. While out on the road, avoid doing anything the learner hasn’t already covered with their driving instructor.

Read the highway code

Has it been a while since you sat your driving test? Can you still remember the difference between a pelican and toucan crossing? With regular updates to driving standards, practices and laws, we recommend refreshing your memory by reading an up-to-date copy of the Highway Code. It also means you’ll be able to help the learner study and practice for their theory test.

Enjoy!

Lastly, we think that helping somebody learn to drive is really special. So, remember – keep calm and hire a dual control car from Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental!
