Top five tips for travelling the NC500

1. 1) Don’t rely on the internet

The 516-mile stretch of coastal scenery is breathtakingly beautiful, but the phone signal is pretty rubbish. From our experience, tourist pitstops and the majority of hotels and accommodation all have good Wi-Fi so you’ll be able to keep on top of your work emails and check in with family back home.

Remember you might not be able to rely on your phone for maps. The route is well signposted in brown tourist road signs however, if all else fails, you can pre-load maps at your accommodation using the Wi-Fi.

2. The Highland mile

An NC500-mile might take longer than your average so you’ll need to consider this when planning your journey. The roads are often single-track, and can be difficult to drive on, leading to much longer journey times between destinations. You’ll also want to factor in times to stop for photographs, and the all-important shot of rolling hills and sunsets.

3. Remember the drink driving laws

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of driving the NC500 and the several drink-related stops along the way. From whisky distilleries, to up-and-coming breweries and a hipster gin distillery, there’s something for everyone, no matter your tipple.

If you’re the designated driver, don’t be tempted to try out the numerous samples you’ll be offered. The staff will be more than happy to let you take some away with you to try later. The drink driving laws have changed in Scotland and are stricter than ever - it’s not worth taking the risk.

4. Plan ahead, but not too much

The famous costal tour can take around five days but if you want the full experience then we’d recommend spending at least six or seven days if you’re able to. Having the extra time will give the much-needed flexibility you’ll appreciate when out on the road. By not having to plan everything so rigidly, you can spend extra time in your favourite places without worrying about having to leave.

5. Have fun!

The NC500 is known for being one of the best road trips in the world. The entire world! Embrace the lack of internet signal and savour every moment out on the road. Take lots of pictures of your adventure, but recognise when to stop and enjoy the moment without seeing it through a lens.

Being in an Arnold Clark Car & Van Rental vehicle will give you the peace of mind of being in a new car with unlimited mileage for hires 4 days and over. The NC500 is truly the perfect destination for your next #RentalRoadTrip
