The Great Polish Map of Scotland

A vast three-dimensional concrete map of Scotland, built in the grounds of a rural Borders hotel, has recently been awarded B-listed status by Historic Scotland.

The feature, known as the Great Polish Map of Scotland, is one of the largest of its kind in the world. It was built by a group of Polish nationals in 1974 to thank the Scots for their hospitality towards Polish soldiers during the Second World War, and to commemorate the war efforts of their countrymen.

Sea eagle success

Six sea eagles took their first flight in Scottish skies last month, marking the end of a successful reintroduction programme.

Over the past six years, 85 young birds have been released from a secret location in Fife in a bid to restore the species to its former range in eastern Scotland. Each bird has been fitted with a radio and wing tags so both project staff and the public can follow their future progress.

Tourists find Britain a welcoming place to visit

New research from VisitBritain suggests that receiving a good welcome is likely to see visitors recommend travelling to the UK to others, with 80% of visitors feeling at least ‘very welcome’ in 2011.

The markets where English is the first language (USA, Australia and Canada) are amongst those feeling most welcome, with almost 40% of Americans reporting to have felt ‘extremely welcome’ during their visit.

Ford’s top Britain's best-loved first cars

Ford favourites are revealed as the most popular first cars of all time in a newly published league table by the UK’s largest insurer, Aviva.

The Ford Escort and Fiesta top the list, with the iconic Anglia, famously seen flying through the air in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, taking third spot. The Anglia, a British classic, was also the most popular car for first-time owners in the 1960s.
