Exploring the Dark Ages

A new book published by National Museums Scotland reveals that Early Medieval Scotland was part of a sophisticated intellectual network with craftsmen mastering complex technologies to create outstanding works of decorative art.

The Early Medieval period is the time after the Romans and before the Vikings, an era of history that used to be known as the “Dark Ages” because of the lack of surviving written sources.

Many misconceptions surround this period of Scotland’s past - the time of the enigmatic Picts and the Gaels, Britons and Anglo-Saxons. The book, “Early Medieval Scotland: Individuals, Communities and Ideas”, uses the wealth of surviving archaeological evidence to take a fresh look at the period and some of the stunning objects that have survived.

Aviemore’s TreeZone awarded five stars

A popular treetop visitor attraction in the Highlands is celebrating after being awarded five-star visitor attraction status by national tourism organisation VisitScotland.

TreeZone, an aerial adventure course based at Rothiemurchus, Aviemore, received the accolade from VisitScotland under its Quality Assurance Scheme. The attraction, which opened at Easter 2010 and incorporates 34 different challenges through the forest canopy, recently welcomed its 25,000th visitor.

All-New Ford Mondeo

Ford unveiled its all-new Ford Mondeo at the 2012 Paris Motor Show last week. The model will feature a raft of innovative technologies including Advanced Active Park Assist – Ford’s first system to support perpendicular parking.

It will also be the first Ford model for Europe to feature a new integral link rear suspension configuration that helps it to deliver greater refinement and more dynamic performance.

Gleneagles to welcome the world

The world will be watching Gleneagles in 2014 when Scotland hosts the next Ryder Cup tournament, First Minister Alex Salmond said, as he was handed the Ryder Cup silver putter at a ceremony on Sunday. The speech followed the conclusion of the 2012 event, which saw the European team retain the trophy in dramatic style.

The First Minister thanked Medinah for a memorable tournament and said that Scotland was honoured and thrilled to be hosting the next event, which will be staged during Scotland’s Year of Homecoming in 2014.

Toyota to unveil the Verso

Toyota is set to unveil its new Verso at the 2012 Paris motor show, which begins later this week. The seven-seat model has undergone a comprehensive redesign, with more than 300 parts changed.

The new Verso builds on the established versatility, practicality and roominess of the current model, but adds more style, comfort and improved handling, says Toyota.
