New recycling unit fuels branch efficiency at South Street

Our Car and Van Rental branch on South Street in Glasgow is the first to test out a fuel recycling unit supplied by Ledbury Welding and Engineering.

The unit has been designed to allow Car and Van Rental branches to recover petrol and diesel from hire vehicles that are no longer being used by the rental branch, and will be moving to our used vehicle sales division.

The equipped recycling unit has two separate channels allowing for both petrol and diesel to be decanted from vehicles that will be moving to the used sales division of the Group. The fuel can then be stored in the recycling unit and used to fill the tanks of the new rental fleet vehicles that move in to replace the old.

Arnold Clark Car and Van Rental Branch Manager Marlene Stevenson explains, ‘While Ledbury was not the cheapest option, we decided that this solution met the highest standards for safety of our staff in decanting fuel from vehicles,’ she continues, ‘By recycling our fuel, we can reduce our operating costs and this of course helps us to pass on the savings to our customers by offering competitive rates and marketing incentives. These are important benefits and we shall be looking at the possibility of installing similar facilities at other hire branches within the Group.’

Rental vehicles are hired and usually returned with a full tank of fuel, or the customer has the option to pay a charge to have the tank re-fuelled by the branch after use. This means rental vehicles will always have full tanks ready should a hire be booked.

Large sums of branch capital are tied up in vehicle fuel due to this process, so to the recycling unit effectively allows the branch to recover, store and re-use what belongs to them, as well as being more time-efficient with the fuel restore taking place on site.
